DP World Tour heading to Mission Hills Haikou

24 February, 2025

The Hainan Classic is gearing up to be the second of two back-to-back events in China, co-sanctioned by the China Tour, following the Volvo China Open. This exciting addition to the 2025 DP World Tour schedule strengthens the Tour’s presence in the region and wraps up the Asian Swing, which is part of the first phase of the Race to Dubai.

Set on the tropical island of Hainan, Mission Hills Haikou is one of Asia’s top golf resorts, featuring ten championship courses, including the famous Blackstone Course where the Hainan Classic will take place. This venue has a rich history, having hosted the 2011 World Cup of Golf, which was won by American golfers Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland.

Ben Cowen, the Chief Tournament & Operations Officer at the DP World Tour, expressed excitement about Mission Hills Haikou hosting the inaugural Hainan Classic. He highlighted the event's significance in the ongoing commitment to China and its role in the Asian Swing of the Race to Dubai. He also thanked the China Golf Association for their support and the Chu family for securing the venue, emphasizing that Mission Hills Haikou is a flagship location for golf in Asia.

Tenniel Chu, Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group, noted that this event marks a big step for Chinese golf in connecting with the global sports scene. He mentioned that hosting international tournaments would give Chinese players a chance to compete against top talent, which is essential for developing local skills. Plus, Hainan’s tropical climate makes it a fantastic place for winter training.

Mr. Tian Xiaojun, Vice President of the China Golf Association, shared his enthusiasm for the Hainan Classic, stating that such sports events boost social and economic development while showcasing China's soft power. He believes this competition will enhance the skills of Chinese golfers and promote the growth of sports tourism and business collaborations.

With its striking volcanic rock landscape and thoughtful design, Blackstone has hosted various notable events, including the World Ladies Championship and the World Celebrity Pro-Am, which was won in 2016 by Li Haotong, a rising star who recently clinched his fourth DP World Tour title.

The Hainan Classic is expected to draw a strong international field, featuring DP World Tour winners, up-and-coming talent, and local players eager to shine on home turf.
