Singapore Golf Association Launches New Program to Support Elite Golfers

6 September, 2025

The Singapore Golf Association (SGA) announced the launch of the SGA Distinguished Donors Program, a new strategic initiative designed to provide financial and professional support to Singapore's top golfers. The program aims to strengthen the country's golf development pipeline and help elite athletes both during and after their competitive careers.

The program, which has already raised S$400,000, is a key effort by the SGA's Athlete Development Pathway Task Force (ADPTF). It allocates 70% of funds raised to a gratuity scheme that provides direct financial support to athletes based on their sporting achievements. This is intended to reduce the financial barriers of pursuing a professional career and provide long-term security. The remaining 30% of funds will support the SGA High Performance Program, which helps aspiring golfers with competition costs, training, and access to elite coaching.

"The SGA Distinguished Donors Program is our commitment to nurturing elite talent and ensuring that golfers who have represented Singapore are supported not only during their careers but beyond," said Tan Chong Huat, President of the SGA. "The path to a sustainable professional career has to be sustained by financial support, and we are grateful to our donors for sharing the same vision as the SGA."

Beyond financial assistance, the program will also help athletes transition to post-sport life through career development opportunities, including internships and management associate programs offered by the SGA's network of partners. This initiative helps ensure a seamless transition for athletes into their next chapter.

Eligibility and Governance

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be Singaporean citizens and members of the SGA High Performance or Professional Programs. They must also demonstrate good character and have achieved key competitive milestones. The ADPTF and the SGA Executive Committee will oversee the program's governance, with all funds ring-fenced specifically for athlete development.

David Ong, Chairman and Independent Director of Ellipsiz Ltd, is one of the program's early distinguished donors. He expressed confidence that corporate backing is essential for developing world-class athletes.

"Ellipsiz is proud to support the development of high-performance golf athletes in Singapore, providing them with the resources and opportunities to excel at the highest level," said Ong. "Our commitment reflects a broader goal of strengthening Singapore’s sporting excellence and inspiring future generations."
