INHAE, South Korea — The long-stalled development of Ungdong District 1 is finally showing signs of life as the Gyeongnam Development Corporation (GDC) prepares to officially reopen the district's centerpiece golf course under a new identity.
The former Aramir Golf Course has been rebranded as Jinhae Sinhang Country Club and is set to resume full operations on April 1. The move marks a critical turning point for the Ungdong Leisure District, which has been mired in delays and administrative gridlock since the previous private operator ran into financial and developmental difficulties.
The normalization process began in earnest last year when GDC made the decisive move to shift from private oversight to direct operation. In a coordinated effort with Changwon City, the corporation cleared a major financial hurdle on November 28, 2023.
"The corporation, together with Changwon City, paid 100.9 billion won ($74 million) on behalf of the private operator Jinhae Ocean Resort as a confirmed investment contribution to cover the syndicated loan," a spokesperson for the corporation confirmed, noting that this payment effectively opened the door for the ownership transfer.
Since December, GDC has worked to overhaul the facility's infrastructure, including:
To maintain continuity, the existing operator was permitted to manage the grounds through the end of March to prevent any service gaps during the transition.
The rebranding to Jinhae Sinhang CC is a calculated effort to align the leisure facility with the region’s massive industrial ambitions. The name pays homage to Jinhae New Port, a $9.5 billion (13 trillion won) mega-project slated to develop 15 berths by 2040.
The New Port is envisioned as a world-class smart logistics hub and a primary economic engine for Northeast Asia. By embedding this "regional identity" into the golf course brand, GDC aims to transform the site from a simple sports venue into a multi-purpose leisure hub that supports the growing business community.
Local residents and municipal leaders have long called for a resolution to the Ungdong stalemate, citing inconveniences for visitors and persistent job insecurity for facility workers. The reopening is expected to create a "virtuous cycle" for the local economy, revitalizing surrounding commercial districts through increased foot traffic.
Ahn Kyung-won, president of Gyeongnam Development Corporation, signaled a commitment to community integration as the project moves forward.
"We plan to develop various programs for local residents and provincial citizens, and to carry out a range of promotional events," Ahn stated.
With the golf course now stabilized, GDC is expected to focus on the broader development of Ungdong District 1, positioning it as a key recreational anchor for the South Gyeongsang Province.
