APGC General Manager Nick Shan Outlines Vision for Sustainable Amateur Golf Ecosystem in Asia-Pacific

28 May, 2026

Nick Shan, General Manager of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC), has shared his strategic vision for strengthening the amateur golf landscape across the region by fostering greater coordination, elevating competitive opportunities, and developing long-term career pathways within the industry.

Since taking up the role in early April 2026, Shan has emphasised the need to build a more robust and sustainable golf ecosystem focused on the amateur game. With the APGC representing 47 member organisations, he sees significant potential in aligning event calendars and increasing the value of regional competitions.

Key Priorities

  • Coordinated Regional Schedule and WAGR Elevation: Shan has identified the unification of event schedules as a critical step forward. Elevating existing tournaments with higher World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points will provide more meaningful competitive opportunities for players across Asia-Pacific.
He noted the importance of addressing varying weather patterns, sub-regional challenges, and rising travel costs by developing a more coordinated calendar. This approach aims to reduce long-distance travel requirements while creating more accessible, high-quality events within the region.
  • Career Pathways Beyond Professional Play: Beyond competition, Shan is focused on creating structured career opportunities for passionate amateurs who may not turn professional. His vision includes developing pathways into golf administration, club management, course operations, and related sectors such as equipment manufacturing and food & beverage. By collaborating with existing education programmes and offering diplomas or on-the-job enrichment opportunities, the APGC aims to build a deeper pool of future administrators, directors of golf, and industry professionals who remain connected to the game they love.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Regional Collaboration:In his first six weeks, Shan has actively engaged with APGC Board members, national associations, and sponsors through tournaments in Japan and Indonesia. He plans to maintain open communication with all stakeholders and reach out to different sub-regions to better understand their specific needs and challenges.
  • Respecting Heritage While Moving Forward: Shan acknowledged the APGC’s rich history since its formation in 1963 and the long-standing support from key partners including The R&A, Augusta National, Rolex, the International Golf Federation, the Japan Golf Association, and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation. He emphasised the importance of continuing to create value for these stakeholders and the membership.

Nick Shan’s appointment signals a renewed focus on collaboration, sustainability, and professional development within Asia-Pacific amateur golf. His approach aims to deliver tangible benefits for players, national bodies, and the wider golf industry across the region.
