Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation Confirm Next Chairman and Vice-Chairman

1 September, 2025

The Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) has confirmed Philip Hassall of New Zealand and General Abdulla Al Hashmi of the United Arab Emirates as its next Chairman and Vice-Chairman, respectively. The prominent golf figures will officially assume their roles at the Confederation’s annual general meeting in Dubai in late October, succeeding current Chairman Taimur Hassan Amin.

A Smooth Transition and High Praise

The leadership transition is seen as a strategic move to continue the APGC's growth and influence in the global golf community. Outgoing Chairman Taimur Hassan Amin expressed strong confidence in the new appointments, stating, “These are exciting times for Asian golf in general, and for the APGC in particular. I have every confidence that the new Chairman-designate, Philip Hassall, and Vice Chairman, General Abdulla, will guide the Confederation with wisdom and vision. Under their leadership, I’m sure the region’s rise in the global golfing world will continue.”

Amin also highlighted their experience, noting, “Both have dedicated many years to the game and are deeply respected, not only in their home countries but also throughout Asia-Pacific.”

Philip Hassall: A Veteran Leader with a Vision

Philip Hassall, a long-standing member of the APGC, has served as a Director for 15 years and currently holds the positions of both Vice Chairman and Treasurer. His extensive experience includes key roles at Golf New Zealand, where he served as both Chairperson and President. Now, as the fifth Chairman of the APGC, Hassall is eager to lead the organization forward.

"I’m excited at what the future holds for golf across the Asia-Pacific region – and for the APGC," Hassall said. "The potential for the game to continue growing is tremendous with the APGC at the forefront."

General Abdulla Al Hashmi: Bringing Diverse Experience to the Fore

General Abdulla, the new Vice-Chairman, brings a unique blend of military and sports leadership to the role. A former UAE Air Force pilot and Defense Attaché, he took up golf while stationed in Australia and developed a deep passion for the game. He currently serves as the President of the Emirates Golf Federation and is a Board member of the UAE National Olympic Committee.

"I’m honoured to be appointed as Vice Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation and look forward to contributing to further elevating the status of golf in the region and the APGC on the global stage," said General Abdulla.

Amin Reflects on a Legacy of Growth

Taimur Hassan Amin's six-year tenure saw significant achievements for the APGC. He led the organization through the challenges of the pandemic, resuming key championships and strengthening partnerships with The R&A and Augusta National. His leadership also saw the launch of new events, including the APGC Mid-Amateur Championship and the APGC Senior Ladies Championship, and memorable team victories in the Bonallack and Patsy Hankins Trophies.

Amin concluded, "While my tenure as Chairman comes to a close, my commitment to the game and to the APGC will always remain. I look forward to seeing the Confederation grow even stronger in the years ahead."
