The first Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) Mid-Amateur Championship is scheduled to take place from August 12 to 14 at the Gading Raya Golf Club, located on the outskirts of Jakarta. This 54-hole men's event marks a significant addition to the region's golf calendar.
Taimur Hassan Amin, Chairman of the APGC, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming championship: “We look forward to welcoming players from many of our member counties to enjoy the competition, make new friends from within our region and enjoy the championship atmosphere."
“Our thanks go to the Indonesia Golf Association for their assistance and support in staging the Mid-Amateur Championship.”
Japto S. Soerjosoemarno, Chairman of the Indonesia Golf Association, emphasized their commitment to the event's success: “We are dedicated to providing all necessary support to ensure a successful championship and we look forward to welcoming all participants to Indonesia.”
The championship will feature four age divisions:
Group A: Ages 25 to 29
Group B: Ages 30 to 37
Group C: Ages 38 to 46
Group D: Ages 47 and above
Participation is open to men holding Amateur Status in accordance with the current Amateur Status Rules of R&A Rules Limited. Bones Floro, Chairman of the APGC’s Championship Committee, noted that the initial event will include four divisions with 30 players each, with future plans to expand to include women's divisions.
The introduction of the Mid-Amateur Championship complements a range of top-level tournaments in the region, catering to all age groups. The APGC also organizes the APGC Junior Championship and APGC Senior Championship, and collaborates with The R&A and Masters Tournament for the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, as well as with The R&A for the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific.
In addition, the APGC oversees team events such as the Nomura Cup for men and the Queen Sirikit Cup for women. In partnership with the European Golf Association (EGA), the APGC conducts the Bonallack Trophy and Patsy Hankins Trophy, which are competitive match play events for elite amateur golfers.
Gading Raya Golf Club, located in Gading Serpong, Tangerang, is easily accessible, just a 45-minute drive from Jakarta via the Jakarta outer ring toll road. Notably, the club has previously hosted prestigious events, including the Southeast Asian Amateur Team Championship for the Putra Cup in 2017 and the Indonesia Ladies Amateur Open and Indonesia Men’s Amateur Open in 2019.
The inaugural Mid-Amateur Championship promises to enhance the golfing landscape in the Asia-Pacific region, providing a platform for amateur golfers to showcase their skills and foster international friendships.
