India’s Golf Revolution Gains Government Momentum as Sports Minister Backs IGPL

9 October, 2025

Icon Stars and Grassroots Commitment

The excitement for the league’s inaugural edition is building, with a host of veteran Indian golf legends already confirmed as Icon stars, including Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa, Gaganjeet Singh Bhullar, Gaurav Ghei, Shiv Kapur, and SSP Chawrasia. Their presence is expected to draw substantial public interest and provide invaluable mentorship.

Beyond the professional competition, the IGPL has outlined an ambitious grassroots development plan. With support from the Indian Golf Union, the league plans to provide international-standard training and coaching to over 10 lakh (one million) school and college students over the next three years.

Furthermore, the IGPL showcased its commitment to social responsibility by announcing a pledge to support flood-affected victims in the state of Punjab, providing essential supplies and financial assistance through the support of 'GB legends.'

The IGPL's model of combining a fast-paced, franchise format with a strong focus on grassroots development and inclusivity is seen as a key driver in transforming golf from an elite pursuit into a mainstream national sport, perfectly aligning with the government's broader vision of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India). The debut is eagerly awaited by the Asian golf community.

The upcoming Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL), set to launch as the country's first-ever franchise-based golf league in January 2026, has received a significant boost with the endorsement of the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.

Dr. Mandaviya met with IGPL co-founder and Ambassador, former cricket star Yuvraj Singh, and CEO Uttam Mundy, praising the league's efforts to popularise golf across India and committing to its growth.

The high-level discussion centred on the league's synergy with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Khelo Bharat Neeti’—a national vision for strengthening India's sports ecosystem—and the importance of fostering talent at the grassroots level through innovative formats like the IGPL.

A New Era for Indian Golf

The IGPL is being organised in partnership with key national bodies, including the Indian Golf Union (IGU), the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), and the PGA of India. It will feature six city-based franchises and adopt a unique team-based format that welcomes a mix of professional and amateur men and women golfers to compete side-by-side.

IGPL CEO Uttam Mundy hailed the government’s support as crucial for the league's mission. “We are thrilled with the Minister’s kind words and his strong support for our efforts. This association with the government will be key to helping us find and nurture future champions, bringing more glory to India,” Mundy stated.

Yuvraj Singh, co-founder and ambassador, reinforced the league’s developmental focus. “His encouragement is a tremendous motivation for us to continue our mission of making golf more accessible and popular across India. This is a huge step forward for the sport, and we are committed to working together to nurture the next generation of golfers,” he added.
