SINGAPORE – In a move signalling a "new, exciting era" for regional golf, the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) has appointed globally respected administrator Nick Shan as its first-ever General Manager.
Shan, 46, emerged as the successful candidate from a highly competitive field of more than 120 applicants. A South African-born father of two, Shan brings over 20 years of experience in tournament management, operations, and golf development across the Asia-Pacific and Southern Africa.
For the past decade, Shan has served as Assistant Director Asia-Pacific for The R&A. His deep familiarity with the APGC is well-established; between 2016 and 2022, he acted as Tournament Director for all APGC championships, reporting directly to the Board.
"Nick has delivered more than 100 professional and amateur tournaments across multiple continents and has all the attributes we were looking for," said Philip Hassall, Chairman of the APGC. "He’s had close ties with the APGC in recent years, is well-known to all our Board members as well as being familiar with how the Confederation operates."
Shan’s influence on the region’s digital infrastructure is already evident. In 2020, he developed the strategic plan that secured the construction of the APGC’s modern website and strengthened its digital stakeholder engagement.
As General Manager, Shan will oversee an organization that represents 47 national golf associations. His role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, including:
The appointment comes at a busy time for the body. Last month, the APGC announced a robust 2026 calendar featuring nine championships hosted across China, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka.
Shan’s resume includes pivotal roles beyond the APGC, including serving as Technical Delegate for golf at the 2018 and 2023 Asian Games and managing the Asia-Pacific Amateur (AAC) and Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) Academies. His prior experience spans the Sunshine Tour, the Asian Tour, and the Faldo Series.
“The Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation has a rich history dating back to 1963, and a wonderfully exciting future ahead of it," Shan said. "I’m honoured to join the Confederation in a full-time capacity at this time of opportunity."
He noted that the region's diverse membership and strong international alliances leave the APGC "uniquely positioned to expand its influence and fulfil its true potential in the golfing world."
Nick Shan will officially assume his new role on April 1.
