Malaysia Tees Up Major Push to Become Asia’s Premier Golf Destination

10 December, 2025

A focused effort to elevate golf club standards and forge strategic partnerships is underway in Malaysia, aiming to position the nation as a leading golf tourism destination in Southeast Asia.

Senior executives from the Malaysian Association of Golf Recreational Club Owners (MAGRO) recently met with Dato’ Shaharuddin bin Abu Sohot, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), along with representatives from Tourism Malaysia, to discuss key strategies for industry progression.

Regional Collaboration as a Key Driver

The meeting follows the blueprint laid out at October’s Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF) Annual International Summit, where Tourism Malaysia’s Director General, Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, delivered a keynote address championing regional collaboration.

Manoharan specifically urged operators and travel distributors to develop comprehensive, multi-country products to maximise value and experience for international visitors.

“These initiatives are designed to position Malaysia as a comprehensive golf destination, one that offers both world-class play and authentic local experiences,” said Manoharan.

He highlighted Southeast Asia’s advantageous position between established golf markets (Japan, Korea, China) and emerging markets (South Asia, Middle East). Manoharan noted the region boasts over 1,000 golf courses, with Malaysia alone offering over 250 championship venues.

“This collective capacity provides unparalleled product diversity, geographic proximity and the infrastructure for comprehensive multi-destination experiences that seamlessly combine golf with heritage sites, culinary tourism, wildlife encounters and island destinations,” he added.

Targeted Initiatives for Growth

To achieve this vision, Tourism Malaysia is implementing a multi-channel strategy, including:

  • Curated Familiarisation Trips: Showcasing premier Malaysian courses and integrated packages for international travel agents and golf media, with plans to expand to multi-country itineraries.
  • Specialised Golf Packages: Launching the ‘Unimaginable Golf Packages’ which combine premium golf with cultural experiences, wellness programmes, culinary tourism, and natural attractions.

A representative for MAGRO confirmed the industry's commitment, stating the organisation “looks forward to continued collaboration with MOTAC and Tourism Malaysia for the progress of the industry.”

This concerted effort by industry leaders and government bodies signals a strong, collaborative drive to attract high-yield international golf tourists and secure Malaysia's place at the forefront of the global golf travel market.
