A long-awaited vision for the residents of Yeonggwang County is finally becoming a reality as the Seongsan Neighborhood Park development project officially breaks ground on full-scale construction.
The project marks a significant transformation for the historic Seongsan area, which served as the site of a fortress during the late Unified Silla period. Once completed, the park will serve as a multi-purpose urban oasis, integrating culture, sports, and relaxation in the heart of Yeonggwang-eup.
The path to construction was a careful, three-year journey. Given the area's immense historical value, Yeonggwang County prioritized a detailed excavation survey to ensure the preservation of buried cultural heritage.
With the survey completed in June of this year, the county has moved forward with a design that harmonizes ancient earthen fortress remains with modern recreational facilities.
The crown jewel of the new development is an 18-hole garden-style park golf course. Each hole is being designed with a specific garden theme, offering a unique experience that combines competitive sport with scenic beauty.
Unlike traditional golf, park golf is designed for accessibility:
Residents are already getting a taste of what is to come. Earlier this year, the county opened two "practice holes" within the park—the Rose Hole (No. 1) and the Camellia Hole (No. 2). These beginner-friendly spots have quickly become popular destinations for morning walks and family outings.
With Yeonggwang-eup housing approximately 43% of the county's 53,000 residents, the demand for accessible green space has been a top priority for local government.
"The garden-style park golf course at Seongsan Neighborhood Park will be more than just a sports facility; it will become a green urban retreat where all residents can enjoy leisure and relaxation," a Yeonggwang County official stated. "We will ensure the smooth progress of construction to establish this as a representative, resident-oriented park."
The project is expected to significantly enhance the region's image and provide a sustainable "green retreat" for future generations.
