NEW DELHI — Golf is no longer just a leisurely pastime or an elite networking tool; it is a major economic engine waiting to be unleashed in India, according to Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) CEO Amandeep Singh Johl.
Speaking at the Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series hosted by Equalsportz, Johl highlighted golf's massive potential to drive national tourism, real estate development, investment, and widespread economic activity.
During a session titled "Understanding Emerging Sports in India," Johl emphasized that the sport’s benefits extend far beyond the greens, though realizing this potential requires a significant shift in infrastructure.
“India needs more golf courses, more access, and more awareness," Johl stated. "Golf can support tourism, real estate, investment, and economic activity. The potential is huge.”
While the economic outlook is vast, Johl also urged parents to rethink how they introduce their children to the game. He cautioned against pushing young athletes into the sport purely with the expectation of creating immediate champions, advocating instead for a pressure-free introduction.
“Golf has been part of me since the age of seven," Johl shared. "Some call it a game, some a sport, some a social space, some a stage to network, and some a catalyst for growth. To me, it is all of the above.”
He described integrity as golf's greatest lesson, noting its striking resemblance to real-world challenges:
The panel discussion brought together a diverse group of sporting experts to examine India's rapidly evolving sports ecosystem. Alongside Johl, the panel featured:
The experts collectively urged Indian families to look beyond traditional sporting choices and explore disciplines that are gaining global prominence through professional leagues and structured development systems.
The discussion touched upon critical pillars for long-term athletic success, including athlete welfare, coaching standards, financial hurdles, and the vital role of parental support.
Organized by Equalsportz, the Raising An Athlete series aims to bridge the gap between experts and families, providing parents with the insights needed to navigate modern sporting careers and effectively support the next generation of Indian athletes.
