
Hong Kong Golf Club has announced a series of leadership transitions to ensure continued excellence in club operations and member services.
Ian Gardner is retiring after more than 11 years as General Manager of the Hong Kong Golf Club - Ian has earned himself an exemplary career in Club Management, having initially moved to Hong Kong in 1983 as the Senior Inspector of Police of the Royal Hong Kong Police.
He joined the club in November 2014, bringing with him over 35 years of club management experience at prestigious private, semi-private, and public golf clubs, country clubs, and resorts across Southeast Asia, South Africa, the Middle East, and the United States including: Nicklaus Club Beijing, Hidden Tiger Golf Club, Abu Dhabi Golf Club and The Orchard Golf & Country Club to name a few.
During his tenure at Hong Kong Golf Club, Ian successfully oversaw annual editions of the Hong Kong Open, multiple Hong Kong Ladies Opens, an Aramco Team Series, a National Games of China Championship, and three LIV Golf Hong Kong events. His leadership ensured seamless delivery of major international tournaments while preserving the club’s rich heritage and maintaining exceptional standards in course conditioning and member services.
The club and the golf community extend a heartfelt congratulations and deep gratitude to Ian Gardner for his outstanding dedication and many contributions throughout a highly successful career. We wish him a happy, relaxing, and well-deserved retirement.

Daniel O’Neill has been promoted to General Manager, stepping into the role previously held by Ian Gardner. Daniel O’Neill is well-placed to take the reins and build upon Ian Gardner’s successes. His deep institutional knowledge and proven leadership will ensure continuity while driving the club forward with the same high standards of excellence.
A highly qualified Australian PGA professional, Daniel first joined the Hong Kong Golf Club as Head Professional in 2010 and was promoted to Director of Golf in December 2021. With more than 15 years of dedicated service at the club, he has been instrumental in strengthening the golf operations, developing coaching and player programmes, and supporting the successful hosting of major events.
David who previously worked at Hong Kong Golf Club from 2008-2011 as a PGA Golf Professional, he returns with extensive senior-level experience in golf club management and operations. He has previously held leadership positions at several well-regarded clubs and resorts including Angkor Golf Resort, Hot Spring Resort and Lanhai International Golf Club, where he gained strong expertise in strategic planning, team leadership, and delivering high-quality golf services. His operational insight and fresh perspective will be a valuable addition to the club’s senior team.
A British PGA member since 2015, Daniel holds the Club Management Diploma (CMDip) and recently completed the PGA Director of Golf Qualification — Daniel has been an integral member of the Hong Kong Golf Club’s professional team for several years. He delivers high-quality coaching, supports daily golf operations, and contributes actively to member services. He has also played a supporting role in major events hosted by the club, including the Hong Kong Open, LIV Golf, Aramco Team Series and the recent China National games.
Founded in 1889, the Hong Kong Golf Club is one of Asia’s oldest and most prestigious private golf institutions. Located in Fanling in the New Territories, it features three championship 18-hole courses — the Old, New, and Eden — renowned for their challenging layouts and excellent conditioning. The club also operates a facility at Deep Water Bay on Hong Kong Island.
With a proud history of hosting international competitions, including multiple editions of the Hong Kong Open, the club remains committed to the highest standards in golf operations, member experience, and the development of the game in the region.
